The Pikler Triangle Climbing Frame is a classic wooden climbing structure. It's a strong, stable, lightweight and beautiful wooden play product that also looks magnificent in the home. A Pikler is fantastic for toddlers wanting to climb, since it's challenging but doesn't offer any real danger. A 9-month-old left to his own imagination will use a Pikler Frame in a very different way to a 3 yr old.
At four months of age, the Pikler can be used as a baby gym by simply hanging toys and objects from the rungs of the frame. (please ensure you follow safety guidelines when attaching Play gym objects)
At 9months of age, your little ones are often still finding their feet, so they will use the Pikler to pull-up and lean on. You may find you little one 'gliding' in and around the base of the triangle.
As your child's skill set and imagination grow, so too does the way in which they will engage with their Pikler.
At two years of age, you may find your little one climbing halfway up and halfway down again, sliding between the bars, or simply using the frame as a fun new play space or reading nook.
By about age 3, (earlier or later depending on where the individual child has prioritised their gross development), you will find your child starting to experiment with climbing over the Pikler. Again, without adult intervention or encouragement, your child will only go as far as they are comfortable and confident, ensuring their chances of a tumble are slim. Whilst it is important not to intervene, it is just as important to support your toddler's successes as well as their failures.
These climbing frames often come upon Montessori websites, although the idea originally comes from the RIE technique. Like most specialty children's furniture, it costs a small fortune. The ones I saw ranged from $330 to well over $600 CAD, and that was just the climber, no slide included. Um…. no thanks. $600 for a wooden triangle is a bit ridiculous. There's a Kickstarter that is selling them at about $250 a climber, but even then since it's a Kickstarter, you have no guarantees about when it's going to arrive, and it still doesn't include the slide/climbing ramp.

The Foldable Climbing Triangle is one of the most versatile and thus one of the most useful items for developing motor skills in our line of play structures. It gives children a chance to develop all sorts of skills appropriate for their age. The add-on climbing ramp is especially interesting to them.
