What Are Alpaca Wool Quilts?

Warm, Light & Cosy – This alpaca duvet is warm without being heavy and keeps you comfortable all night long.

Our Alpaca quilts, woven with 100% Tencel®* or cotton texture, are derived both from quality craftsmanship by the Australian family-owned company, and from the natural and inherent properties of alpacas fleece.

Alpaca fleece is renowned for holding warmth even in thin, light layers, but allowing air to breathe through the fibre, an aspect that’s very much in evidence in this alpaca quilt.

Alpaca bedding contains no lanolin, so it is considered less allergenic than bedding from wool. For those with wool allergies, the alpaca duvet can still provide them with a pleasant sleep under a natural animal fibre quilt.

What Is Alpaca Fleece (Alpaca Fibre) For Alpaca Quilt?

Alpaca fleece is the natural fibre harvested from an alpaca. It is a soft, durable, luxurious and silky natural fibre. Alpaca fleece is similar to sheep’s wool, and it is warmer, hypoallergenic because it does not have lanolin, and it is not prickly.

Alpaca fleece is made into various products, from very simple and inexpensive garments made by the indigenous communities to sophisticated, industrially made and expensive products such as suits.

Alpaca fleece is considered as one of the world’s finest, softest and high-quality fibres. Woolcomfort has come up with a proven and reliable process of combining these fibres to produce the Woolcomfort Alpaca Quilt.

Its filling is made of 100% “Soft Gold™” Alpaca wool and is encased in a specially designed Luxor Cotton™ fabric. The resulting product is an alpaca quilt that’s amazingly soft and balanced with breathability and warmth – which provides the best bedding experience anyone can have.

Alpaca fleece is a natural fibre that’s collected from an alpaca. The fibres have fine, soft, sturdy, comfy and silky properties. Alpaca fleece is not prickly and is hypoallergenic as it doesn’t contain lanolin.

Alpaca fleece, once harvested, can be made into different products – from simple and economical garments made and used by local communities to classy, industrially made and luxurious products including quilts.

Alpaca Fibre Structure?

what are alpaca wool quilts

Alpaca fibre is similar in structure to sheep wool fibre. Its softness comes from having a different smoother scale surface than sheep wool.

Fibre diameter is a highly inherited trait in both alpaca and sheep. The difference in the individual fibre scales compared to sheep wool also creates the glossy shine, which is prized in alpaca.

Alpaca fibres have a higher tensile strength than wool fibres. In processing, slivers lack fibre cohesion, and single alpaca rovings lack strength. Blend these together, and the durability is increased several times over.

What Are The Advantages Of Alpaca Quilt?

Alpaca fleece is highly valued for its softness and fineness. Its qualities for use in bedding is unmatched by any other fibre.

  • Hollow fibre, warmer for equal weight: It’s simply the warmest all-weather friendly fibre. Alpaca fibres contain microscopic air pockets, providing great insulation and keeping you warm during the winter. These same air pockets allow for outstanding breathability, thus keeping you cool in the summer. A high-quality light sweater made from Alpaca wool can keep you warmer than most heavy jackets and more comfortable than many a cotton sweatshirt.
  • Weight: Those same microscopic air pockets help to reduce the weight of Alpaca fibres, making Alpaca fabric almost as light as air.
  • Stronger (per same fineness): Alpaca wool fibres are fine, lightweight and silky. Yet this luxury fibre has great strength and durability. With proper care, high-quality Alpaca apparel can be an heirloom passed down through the generations.
  • Softer, less itchy and irritating to the skin. Alpaca is a super-soft fibre. Unlike its close relative, wool, alpaca does not have scales on the fibre, making it naturally smooth & soft. There are many different types of alpaca, but the best, which Bambi use, is Super Fine Alpaca fleece. At around 16-18 microns, this fleece has the feel of cashmere. (To give an understanding of how fine Super Fine Alpaca is, a most human hair is at least 100 microns – 5 times thicker than alpaca fibre).
  • Naturally, hypoallergenic – Alpaca is free from danger and lanolin, which causes allergic skin reactions in some people. Unlike other fleeces, alpaca does not contain lanolin, which puts it into the classification of a ‘dry-fibre’. The benefit of a ‘dry fibre’ is that it requires no chemical processing whatsoever, making it not only hypoallergenic but a very eco-friendly fibre.
  • Alpaca will stay cleaner longer because it is lanolin-free and does not hold dust.
  • Less shrinkage (washable)
  • Resists acquired odours (odours dissipate overnight)
  • It is a natural biodegradable fibre which is environmentally friendly
  • Moisture absorbent – Alpaca fleece can absorb up to 30% of its own weight, to keep your dry and warm and cool in summer
  • High tensile strength – durability and long life
  • Lanolin free, and therefore not requiring chemical scouring to clean the fibre
  • Naturally flame retardant
  • Almost Completely Waterproof: Alpaca fibre is almost completely waterproof. This is because water is not absorbed into the hair, but rather, sheets of it. This capability comes down to the fibre being hollow as it traps in more heat and mechanically pushes the water away. Because of this, alpaca does not smell and is not subject to mould and mildew under normal circumstances.

The alpaca has a very fine and light fleece. It does not retain water, is a thermal insulator even when wet and can resist solar radiation effectively. These characteristics guarantee the animals a permanent and appropriate coat to protect against extreme changes of temperature. This fibre offers the same protection to humans.

Features & Benefits Of Alpaca Fleece Quilts And Duvets

The fleece of the alpaca is of outstanding quality. Unlike sheep’s wool, it is very clean and naturally contains no lanolin, so it doesn’t require chemical processing. Alpaca fleece is also semi-hollow, giving it a unique, lightweight feel as well as superior thermal performance.

Alpaca fleece in its natural state is allergy-free and luxuriously soft, producing a beautiful handle and drape to bedding products filled with this material. In addition, alpaca fleece is moisture absorbent, which allows bedding to remain warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Originally from South America, legend states that alpacas were a gift to the ancient Inca peoples, and the fleece of this prized animal was reserved for the royal family. Today, alpaca fleece is among the rarest and most desired animal fibres in the world.

Alpacas were commercially imported into Australia beginning 30 years ago, and have adapted well to the climate and the geography. The population of these beautiful, intelligent animals in Australia today number approximately 125,000. Kelly & Windsor Australia uses only the fleece of Australian raised alpacas in their luxury bedding products.

  • Outstanding thermal performance – alpaca fibres are semi-hollow which traps warm air to keep you warm.
  • Excellent warmth to weight ratio – you don’t need a heavy quilt to be comfortably warm. Alpaca is a completely hollow fibre, meaning it has a massive propensity for trapping heat while, at the same time, being extremely lightweight. In tests conducted by the Yocum-McCall Testing Laboratories, alpaca fibre was shown to be three times warmer than sheep’s wool.
  • Luxuriously soft and with a beautiful handle and feel
  • Very good moisture absorbency to promote your sleeping comfort

Alpaca Gold His & Hers Quilt

The Alpaca Gold His & Hers quilts provide a one-piece quilt solution for those sleeping couples where one person feels cold, and the other person is too warm. A very common “His & Hers” sleeping problem.

The Kelly & Windsor Alpaca Gold His & Hers quilts originated from several retailers who reported that they had many customers whose partners had such different warmth needs that their quality of sleep was being affected.

A heavier warmer quilt suited one partner, but a cooler lighter weight quilt was better for the other partner. The solution to the problem was to design and manufacture a single one-piece quilt that was warmer on one side and cooler on the other. Simple!

The His & Hers quilt is manufactured by spreading a layer of pure combed alpaca fleece of 300 gsm across the full width of the quilt and then spreading the second layer of 200 gsm pure alpaca fleece across one half of the quilt to create a thermal air pocket improving the warmth of the quilts, which equals a warm side filling weight of 500 grams per square metre.

If you are looking for the ultimate in sleeping comfort for you and your partner, the Alpaca Gold His & Hers quilt is the solution.

And if you are single, the Alpaca Gold His & Hers quilt is also a great idea, use the lighter weight side in summer and the heavier side in winter. One quilt for the whole year.

Made in Australia from premium quality materials, handmade and with a five-year quality guarantee.

Zealaner Alpaca Wool Quilt

Alpaca is relatively unknown; shy and gentle animals were domesticated over 6000 years ago. They are cloven-hoofed mammals from the Camelidae family, close cousins of llamas. Alpacas come from South America, where the ancient Incas prized their precious fleece.

The fleece is much finer and softer than mohair, especially greater warmth. The fibre does not have lanolin, therefore, make it gentle to sensitive skins.

Zealaner Logo Printed has many colours of fleece, but we only choose white and golden colours to use for our quilt.

The amazing qualities of alpaca fibre make it one of the most luxurious natural fibres in the world. Its quality is surpassed only by the fibre of the vicuña, a wild Andes-dwelling mammal considered to be an ancestor to the domesticated alpaca.

The fleeces made for quilting inner can keep you warm in winter and cooler in summer due to its unique fact of the fibre property. Each fibre has many air pockets which contract and expand to the environment temperature.

Why Is An Alpaca Blanket Better?

The superior quality of an alpaca blanket makes it a treasured accessory for staying warm at home, particularly in the winter months. Alpaca wool is a fine fabric that has many desirable qualities, and if properly cared for, blankets and other garments will provide years of durable comfort.

The wool sheared from alpacas is lighter, three times stronger, and five times warmer than sheep’s wool.

Of all the warmest fabrics used in winter blankets, alpaca products outshine Gore-Tex and goose-down comforters in their ability to keep people warm and dry. It feels smooth like silk, yet as beautiful as cashmere. The absence of lanolin creates an anti-itch fabric, and its essential oils resist water and surface dirt naturally.

Alpaca fabrics are rated in microns, and the higher grades of Royal and Baby Alpaca are rated to a standard between twenty and twenty-three microns.

These would be the softest, lightest, most durable grades to be found when choosing an alpaca blanket or garment, and some people are more than willing to pay the higher price for this level of quality.

Alpacas are gentle, and lovable creatures raised on farms in many different countries. There are several different breeds of alpacas, and each has a slightly different fleece texture. Their variety as a species produces fleece in 22 different natural colours, from white to black. Their diet consists of mostly grasses and hay, and their close relation to the camel family allows them to consume less water than other animals do.

Making an alpaca blanket or any other clothing or furnishing represents a proactive movement toward “green” manufacturing that allows companies to produce their goods more cheaply and offer products with less synthetic contents.

This is the trend that is influencing many other industries as the world becomes more eco-conscious in the 21st century.
